Heart of Darkness and the Secret Agent: And, the Secret Agent (New York Public Library Collectors Editions)
Published in Hardcover by Doubleday (December, 1997)
Authors: Joseph Conrad and Whitman
Average review score:

Duplicity at its best
Joseph Conrad, in his two novels "Heart of Darkness" and "The Secret Agent", demonstrate the duality of man at the extremes. In "Heart", Conrad uses the narrative of Charlie Marlow and his journey through the Congo basin to reveal how much man can change from what he professes as his aims and what he succombs to through his actions. Marlow and the other central character Kurtz are in many ways foils for each other, both in pursuit of an end, and both gaining realization of the futility of their pursuit.

Conrad succeeds in generalizing these characters' development to humanity at large, not just in an imperialist context of Africa, but in the heart of civilization of the time, London, in his later novel "The Secret Agent". Again, the themes of futility and disillusionment loom large in this work, but are made much more immediate and absurd in the context of the urban environment. Verloc, his wife Winnie, and the characters surrounding them all live their lives without discernible meaning, which end without meaning as well.

Both these novels draw from historical events--Conrad's trip to the Congo where he compromised his health and the 1894 Greenwich Observatory bombing outrage--and show Conrad's skill in weaving narratives of beautiful prose in a language that was his third. These stories are a great introduction to Conrad, and represent the turning point for the novel following the Victorian age into the Modern.

I Fought With Geronimo
Published in Paperback by Univ of Nebraska Pr (November, 1987)
Authors: Jason Betzinez, Wilbur Sturtevant Nye, and J. Franklin Whitman
Average review score:

He lived from the Stone Age to the Atomic Age!
A fascinating story of a "wild" Indian who made his way successfully through the various stages of his life: from the unfettered freedom of the mountains, to the tenuous search for refuge in a hostile environment, through the confinement of the reservation, to the peaceful contentment of Christian love. Jason tells the remarkable story of his life from 1860 to 1959 with self-effacing honesty. He will certainly blur, if not erase, the stereotypical image of the "Hollywood" Apache.

IRAD: Interactive Radiology Review & Assessment (CD-ROM for Windows & Macintosh, Single User)
Published in CD-ROM by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins Publishers (15 December, 2000)
Authors: Felix S., Md. Chew, Mitchell J. Kline, and Gary J. Whitman
Average review score:

Essential!
This has to be the #1 product on CD-ROM for reviewing radiology! I used it to prepare for boards and even used it to review cases while on the airplane to Louisville. iRAD contains tons of cases with high quality images, a description of the findings, a pertinent differential, the diagnosis, and a full discussion. It is conveniently organized into ten sections (chest, nucs, GI, etc.) and even has a final posttest (you don't have to submit your answers unless you need the CME's). Multiple choice questions with each case are a great way to simulate an oral examination, either alone or in groups.

Italian Ingredients Cookbook
Published in Hardcover by Lorenz Books (September, 1997)
Authors: Kate Whitman, Jeni Wright, Angela Boggiano, and Kate Whiteman
Average review score:

Excellent combination of italian ingredients and recipes
This is the first cook-book that I've seen (I have more then 100), that in depth provides insight into the neccesary combination of ingredients and the recipes. This is extremely interesting and helpful when you're investigating food from other countries. The range of recipes is sufficient to any occasion, either summer picnic or dinner party.

The book is highly recommended, It's a must for lovers of the Italian cuisine.

I'm looking for similar books related to Indian, Chineese Mecican, Spanish food. Are there any in the same serie ?

Jefferson Nickels: Collection 1938 to 1961

Are your old coin books falling apart?
My version of this coin book for nickels (circa 1968) was so badly worn that I couldn't open it without the coins falling out. This makes a great gift for your children. Have them look through the coins in their piggy banks and keep the best. Then take the rest to the bank and ask to exchange them for new rolls of coins. (Be sure to ask the bank for some paper coin wrappers for your next trip back.) It is exciting for the kids to get a new roll to go through each week.

Leaves of Grass: The Deathbed Edition
Published in Paperback by Book-of-the-Month Club (March, 1992)
Author: Walt Whitman
Average review score:

The definitive edition of a misunderstood poet
Whenever I hear talk of Walt Whitman, 90% of the time it has something to do with his homosexuality, and very little or nothing to do with his poetry. And when I do hear people talking about or reading writings on his poetry, it is the same cliched talk of the roistering, life-embracing, obscene (for the times) poet of democracy...Whatever exactly that may mean....This deathbed edition gives the lie to this absurdly one dimensional view of a poet who, as it turns out, is actually just as or more concerned with death as with life. Consider some of the following quotes: "And I will show that nothing can happen more beautiful than death"(p.16)..."And to die is different from what any one supposed, and luckier."(p.25)..."Has anyone supposed it lucky to be born? I hasten to inform him or her that it is just as lucky to die..."(p.25)..."What indeed is finally beautiful except death and love?"(p.87)..."O Soul....pondering the themes that thou lovest best, Night, sleep, death and the stars."(p.360)-These are but a few of the quotes that led me to appreciate Walt Whitman as a poet and not some sort of advertising agent for his own ego. The common conception based on a few lines of a few of his poems does him a serious injustice.-This deathbed edition gives us the full scope of his poetic gift. I recommend it to all who are willing to take the time to understand the multidimensional quality of Whitman and his poetry.

Best Book of Season 1
This book was my favorite, and I'm more that sure that no Digimon book is like it. This was such a relief and surprise of how they defeated Devimon. Well, I'm not telling you anymore since it's so good, except that you can't miss this one.

The industry standard for the beginning coin collector
The nice, lock-in feature prevents your coins from falling out of the folder, while holding them in a nice layout. The only drawback is you cannot see the reverse of the coins when they're in the folder.
